Overcoming Migration Procrastination Part 3: Using Atlassian’s Cloud Migration Tools

RightStar TeamSeptember 21, 2023

With Atlassian’s Server deployment option reaching end of life early next year,  this multi-part blog series explores reasons you may have delayed migrating to the Atlassian Cloud and what to do next. Maybe you have concerns about migrating your data and configuration from your Server implementation to the Atlassian Cloud. But Atlassian offers migration tooling and guidance to help! Today, let’s explore Atlassian’s cloud migration tooling.

Atlassian shipped their first cloud versions of Jira and Confluence in 2011. Since then, we’ve seen many of our Atlassian clients moving from the self-managed model to take advantage of Atlassian’s maintenance-free SaaS offering, where they handle all the software upgrades, and all you have to do is administer and use the tool. Maybe you investigated the move to the Cloud several years ago but didn’t find many good tools to help with migration. Much of the migration effort to move from Server to Cloud was manual back then.

Well, that’s all changed – now there are excellent tools to support your migration! Since Atlassian’s announcement in 2020 about the retirement of their self-managed Server products in Feb 2024, they have heavily invested in providing tooling and guidance to assist their customers with cloud migrations. Atlassian has provided a tremendous online Server-to-Cloud migration guide, a step-by-step walkthrough of the migration process taking you through the six stages of migration: assess, plan, prep, test, migrate, and launch.

Even more importantly, though, Atlassian has designed and built their Cloud Migration Assistants, which now provide the very best way of moving everything you need from the Server version of Jira, Confluence, or Bitbucket to the Atlassian Cloud. Gone are the days of searching for 3rd party tooling (or building your own) to move your Atlassian data and configuration to the Cloud. The Cloud Migration Assistants are designed to let you migrate your Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket implementations all at once or one project/space/repository at a time without overwriting existing data, including instantly migrating users and groups, all while tracking your migration progress in real-time.

In the following parts of this series, we will continue to review why you may have not yet migrated to the Atlassian Cloud or why you may think the Cloud isn’t for you. But as you can see, Atlassian’s Cloud migration tools are ready for you! With the end of support for the Server products just less than five months away, now’s the time to migrate to Cloud. Take a closer look at Atlassian’s Server-to-Cloud migration tools and guides today.

Atlassian has reported that forty percent of their customers who move to Cloud said it was easier than expected, and 33 percent say the process went faster than they’d hoped. Still, migration to the Cloud can be a daunting task. But it’s a task RightStar can help with!
