OSD – v12.1 New and Improved but Complicated

Client Management v12.1 Released with Hotfix (12-2015) is allowing customers more confidence in upgrading from v12.0 and earlier to the latest release. Besides the visual changes (monochromatic icons) the OS Deployment module has gone through a radical upgrade. This new upgrade will require all customers using OS Deployment to spend many hours learning and troubleshooting their environments to utilize these improvements.
Many customers voted on much needed improvements to BMC’s Client Management on the Communities site. Some of these requests were to centralize the imaging process so remote sites did not need to set up their own “OSD Managers Devices” and either build their own “Gold” disk or replicate the image from Corporate and have those WIM files available locally. Another request/requirement was to keep pace with newer technology and be able to “Network Boot” using UEFI. BMC delivered on both fronts. But to accomplish this feat a new redesign was required. Even though BMC posted several warning messages about this new functionality and issued caution about upgrading prematurely some customers are finding themselves in need of Professional Services to assist in building out this new functionality.
I had a conversation this past week with a customer that has found themselves spending many long days working with BMC Tech Support to enable them to again commence imaging devices using BCM. Even though they are now “limping” along with OSD they do not have the level of understanding to train the Global Team on the ins and outs of the new process. This is not the only customer in this situation and as a preemptive strike it would be wise to have customers set up a Test instance prior to upgrading to 12.1. This customer did just that but did not test OSD and fully understand the ramifications of upgrading catching them in a not good place.
As a result, I will be visiting this customer in the coming weeks to enable them to utilize all the new functionality of the newly redesigned interface and operational differences. I would suggest any customer planning on upgrading to the latest release and is using the OS Deployment module of Client Management read this statement:
